JOHANNESBURG, October 13 (Xinhua) — At least 40 people, including seven children, were killed in a bus accident that occurred Sunday evening near the town of Louis Trichardt in South Africa's Limpopo province, the country's Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said on Monday.
According to preliminary reports, the bus skidded off the road on a steep mountain pass and overturned. The victims, Zimbabwean and Malawian nationals, were traveling home from the Eastern Cape Province, the department reported.
"This is a heartbreaking tragedy," said Limpopo Provincial Governor Phofi Ramathuba. "On behalf of the Limpopo Provincial Government, we express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, including those in Zimbabwe and Malawi. We wish a full and speedy recovery to all those injured."
The victims were taken to hospitals. The Limpopo provincial government said they were receiving psychosocial support.
