NEW YORK, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) — Sixteen people were killed in a devastating explosion at a military explosives plant in the U.S. state of Tennessee on Friday morning, with no survivors, local authorities said Saturday.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) said in a press release that the number of missing people was revised from 18 to 16 after it was determined that two people were not at the scene at the time of the explosion, as originally believed.

An explosion occurred at a plant owned by Accurate Energy Systems, a company that manufactures military explosives, around 7:45 a.m. local time (12:45 p.m. GMT) southwest of Nashville, Tennessee. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

Response efforts continued into Saturday, with emergency services personnel from across the region working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is assisting with the scene and investigation.

Due to the large amount of debris and the potential presence of explosive materials, cleanup operations are proceeding slowly and methodically. Controlled detonations will be conducted periodically to safely dispose of unstable or hazardous materials, TEMA reported.

There is no threat to public health or safety from the explosion. However, the agency urged the public to avoid the area so emergency services can continue their work safely and effectively.
