UN, October 11 (Xinhua) — Minutes after the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip came into effect, displaced Palestinians began returning to the northern areas of the enclave, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Friday.
Israeli tanks blocked the Al-Rashid road along the coast after people tried to move north following the ceasefire.
“Some of those who have already managed to reach Gaza City reported that upon returning they found their homes in an even worse state of disrepair,” OCHA reported.
The agency said the global organization and its humanitarian partners are ready to immediately scale up their humanitarian assistance.
“After two years of war, Gaza’s infrastructure urgently needs to be rebuilt to enable reconstruction,” OCHA said, calling on all leaders supporting the ceasefire to help ensure conditions for unimpeded humanitarian operations.
OCHA called on all parties to the conflict to facilitate the rapid and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in need. "Aid must be delivered on a larger scale so that the UN and its partners can reach everyone in need and alleviate suffering," OCHA stated.
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said talks were underway with Israeli authorities to clarify what the UN and its partners would be able to bring into Gaza, in what quantities, and through which access points. –0–
