Bellinzona, Switzerland, October 11 (Xinhua) — China welcomes more Swiss friends to become "Walter Bosshards of the new era," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Friday.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, made the statement at a reception hosted by Swiss Federal Councillor and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in the city of Bellinzona, during which the Chinese diplomat exchanged views with local officials.
The Chinese Foreign Minister recalled that in the 1930s, Swiss journalist Walter Bosshard undertook a challenging journey to China, becoming the first European reporter to visit the city of Yan'an, the wartime headquarters of the Communist Party of China and a key revolutionary base in Shaanxi Province (Northwest China), and to interview Chairman Mao Zedong.
As Wang Yi noted, at a time when many false reports about the CCP were circulating in the international community, W. Bosshard, drawing on his direct experience in Yan'an, wrote that China's hope lies in Yan'an, since the Chinese Communist Party embodies the union of discipline and ideals.
Wang Yi noted that China is a country with a centuries-old history that is constantly evolving and changing. He stated that if any country in the world has undergone the greatest transformation and achieved the highest growth rates, it is China.
He pointed out that China has lifted some 800 million people out of poverty, created a middle-income class of more than 500 million people, and is currently advancing along the path of modernization with its 1.4 billion people, a process that offers enormous opportunities for cooperation.
China welcomes more Swiss friends to become “Walter Bosshards of the new era” – people who visit the country to share in cooperation, the future, and opportunities, Wang Yi concluded. –0–
