Moscow, October 8 (Xinhua) — Russia supports the key goals of the Global Summit of Women, which will take place next week in Beijing and coincide with the 30th anniversary of the 1995 World Conference on Women. This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova on Wednesday, responding to a question from a Xinhua correspondent.
"Russia supports the forum's key goals: summing up thirty years of international work to promote true gender equality, intensifying global efforts to combat women's limited access to education and healthcare, and developing steps to enhance women's role in the digital economy," the Russian diplomat said.
She noted that the summit is one of the key events in the campaign to ensure gender equality implemented by the Chinese authorities.
M. Zakharova confirmed the participation of a representative Russian delegation at the summit, led by Galina Karelova, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Federal Structure, Regional Policy, Local Government, and Northern Affairs. Representatives of the Women's Union of Russia, the largest and most respected women's organization, which will celebrate its 85th anniversary next year, will also participate in the forum. "The partnership between the Women's Union of Russia and the All-China Women's Federation has been developing for several years. A memorandum of cooperation has been signed between these two organizations," the Russian Foreign Ministry representative noted.
According to M. Zakharova, Russia shares China's view that genuine care for women and gender equality are a matter of particular concern and require special attention from the state. She emphasized that many events, including those held within the BRICS and SCO frameworks, are serving as platforms for Russian-Chinese cooperation on these issues.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed confidence that the decisions made at the summit will contribute to the creation of an international environment conducive to the harmonious development of women and increased their involvement in addressing global issues.
"We are convinced that the upcoming summit, to which Beijing is paying particular attention, will provide a good opportunity to advance relevant Russian-Chinese dialogue and coordinate promising steps on the gender track in a bilateral format," added M. Zakharova, wishing the summit effective and fruitful work.
