UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) — United Nations peacekeepers and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have jointly freed 410 children held by armed groups in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said on Tuesday.
The peacekeeping mission in the DRC, known as MONUSCO, worked with UNICEF from January to September to free 344 boys and 66 girls held by armed groups in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, he said.
S. Dujarric said the released children were referred to services that will help them return to normal life after their ordeal.
"During the same period, the United Nations verified 165 cases of recruitment and use of children (by armed groups), including 30 girls and 135 boys," he said. "Our colleagues tell us that these figures highlight the continued vulnerability of children in conflict-affected areas and underscore the need for sustainable protection measures, including prevention, accountability, and long-term reintegration support."
S. Dujarric said that within the framework of the world organization’s Children and Armed Conflict program, peacekeeping missions work to prevent and respond to grave violations against children, including their recruitment and use by armed forces and groups. –0–
