Lhasa, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) — All hikers and local service personnel stranded by heavy snowfall in Tingri County, Shigatse City, Xizang Autonomous Region, southwest China, had safely reached safety as of the evening of October 7, local authorities announced Tuesday.
According to a statement released by the Tingri County Information Office, a total of 580 tourists and more than 300 staff members have safely arrived at the collection point in Qudan Township and surrounding areas, where local staff are arranging for their return.
More than ten more tourists arrived at the advance camp, which had been specially set up to meet them en route to the assembly point. Along the way, they were accompanied by local teams carrying food, medicine, heaters, oxygen tanks, and warm clothing.
Heavy snowfall hit the county on the evening of October 4, creating problems for hikers on mountain trails near the village of Qudan. County authorities quickly mobilized emergency teams to establish communications and provide assistance to those affected.
On October 5, authorities in Tingri County announced the temporary closure of some tourist areas due to heavy snowfall, including the landscape park of the world's highest peak, Mount Qomolangma. -0-
