Almaty, October 8 (Xinhua) — Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has instructed the formation of a working group on parliamentary reform as part of the implementation of the head of state's 2025 address to the people of Kazakhstan. This was reported on Wednesday by the Kazinform news agency, citing the government press service.
The working group includes representatives of the Majilis (lower house of parliament) and the Senate (upper house of parliament), the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan, legal scholars and other experts, and members of the National Kurultai.
The address to the people of Kazakhstan, titled "Kazakhstan in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: Current Challenges and Their Solutions through Digital Transformation," was delivered on September 8. The address proposed making Kazakhstan's parliament unicameral.
According to K.-Zh. Tokayev, the reform discussion will take at least a year, after which a national referendum could be held in 2027. The necessary amendments to the Constitution could then be made.
