Lusaka, October 7 (Xinhua) — Four illegal miners were killed in a gold mine collapse in Shivangandu district in northern Zambia, police said on Monday.

Police Public Relations Officer Ray Hamunga said the pit wall at the gold mine collapsed on Sunday afternoon while four workers were manually digging for gold.

Efforts were immediately made to retrieve the bodies, but by the time rescuers reached the workers, all four had already died, the officer said in a statement on Facebook.

R. Hamunga once again called on the public not to engage in illegal mining.

The discovery of minerals such as gold in some areas of Zambia has led to a rise in illegal mining, despite government efforts to legalise small-scale operations through licences.
