Brasilia, October 6 – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation on Monday, initiated by the latter. During the conversation, the Brazilian leader called on his US counterpart to lift the recently imposed 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods, according to the Communications Secretariat of the Brazilian President's Office.
In a telephone conversation, L.I. Lula da Silva noted that Brazil is one of three G20 countries with which the United States has a positive trade balance, and called on D. Trump to lift tariffs and sanctions against Brazilian officials, including the revocation of their American visas.
“The leaders of the two countries spoke in a friendly tone for 30 minutes,” the statement said.
Also participating in the conversation were Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, the President's press secretary and his chief adviser.
The call came amid tensions over Trump's decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on a range of Brazilian goods, starting August 6.
The two leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future. L.I. Lula da Silva again invited Donald Trump to attend the UN Climate Change Conference, which will be held this November in the Amazonian city of Belém.
The US President announced the possibility of a direct meeting with the Brazilian leader last month during the UN General Assembly in New York. The two presidents briefly met, greeting each other and expressing their willingness to engage in dialogue.
