UN, October 7 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the ongoing arbitrary detentions of UN and partner staff, as well as the ongoing illegal seizure of UN premises and assets in Houthi-controlled areas, the UN chief's spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said on Monday.
The condemnation came after the Houthis, Yemen's de facto authorities, recently detained nine more UN staff members.
The latest detentions bring the total number of UN staff arbitrarily detained in Yemen since 2021 to 53, the statement said.
These actions hinder UN operations in Yemen and the delivery of vital aid. The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned about the safety of UN personnel in Yemen, the statement noted.
A. Guterres reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all UN personnel, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, and diplomatic missions, the statement said. "They must be respected and protected in accordance with applicable international law," he stressed.
