PHNOM PENH, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) — The World Bank on Tuesday lowered its economic growth forecast for Cambodia in 2025 to 4.8 percent from 6 percent in 2024.

World Bank Chief Economist for East Asia and Pacific Aditya Mattoo said US tariff hikes and the border conflict with Thailand were holding back that country's economic growth.

On August 1, the United States imposed a 19 percent tariff on all goods imported from Cambodia.

“Cambodia and Laos currently have some of the highest tariffs in the region,” he said during an online press conference to announce the release of the World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific Economic Report.

"Next year will be more difficult. Demand will also likely decline," added A. Mattu.

He said tensions on the border with Thailand, which led to border closures, had led to a reduction in remittances and trade.

The World Bank also lowered its forecast for economic growth in the kingdom for 2026 to 4.3 percent. –0–
