JAKARTA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a school building collapse in Indonesia's East Java province has risen to 53 as search efforts continue for those trapped under the rubble, local rescue services said Monday.
A joint rescue team recovered eight bodies from the rubble of the Al-Hosini Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo district on Sunday evening, according to Nanang Sigit, head of the East Java Search and Rescue Agency.
As of the eighth day of the operation, a total of 157 victims had been identified, including 104 survivors and 53 fatalities.
The evacuation process is still ongoing, with the primary focus currently being on clearing debris on the northern side of the facility, in areas not connected to the main structure. Heavy equipment and electrical equipment have been deployed to support the search and rescue efforts.
The building collapsed on September 29 while hundreds of students were reportedly praying inside, leaving many trapped under the rubble.
