Tbilisi, October 5 (Xinhua) — Destabilization efforts in Georgia were orchestrated by forces acting on behalf of foreign intelligence services, President Mikheil Kavelashvili stated at a briefing on Sunday.
M. Kavelashvili assessed the events of October 4 that unfolded near the presidential residence.
According to him, government agencies will take strict measures against calls for the violent overthrow of the government. "Forces organized by foreign intelligence services attempted to destabilize the domestic situation," Kavelashvili noted.
The President of Georgia stated that in recent days, society has witnessed acts of vandalism and provocative actions aimed at undermining public order. In particular, parts of the city's historically valuable infrastructure, popular among local residents and tourists, were destroyed.
M. Kavelashvili emphasized that such actions are unacceptable, and the wise Georgian people will not allow anyone to change the country's government by force. He expressed confidence in the resilience of state institutions and called on the competent authorities to respond strictly to any attempts at destabilization.
On October 4, municipal elections were held in Georgia, during which mass unrest erupted near the presidential residence in the capital, Tbilisi. According to the Ministry of Health, 21 Interior Ministry employees and six demonstrators were hospitalized as a result of the clashes. Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Darakhvelidze reported on Sunday that Interior Ministry officers had detained several protest leaders.
