NANNING/HAIKOU, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — Typhoon Matmo, the 21st storm of this Pacific typhoon season, intensified as it approached coastal areas of southern China, triggering mass evacuations in the south.
The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GZAR) suspended all coastal passenger ferry services. Approximately 26,000 tourists on Weizhou Island were evacuated; none were stranded on the island. Local authorities suspended coastal projects and port operations, and evacuated 4,024 people from ships and oil platforms.
On Sunday morning, the Maritime Affairs Office of the NCAA activated Level 1 emergency response, the highest in the four-tier typhoon response system, directing 168 vessels to safe waters and berthing 889 vessels at ports.
As of Sunday afternoon, the island province of Hainan had evacuated more than 197,000 people from high-risk areas, while the island extended its red alert, the highest level, for the typhoon.
Guangdong Province raised its typhoon emergency response to the highest level, evacuating more than 150,000 people to safety.
