GUANGZHOU, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) — More than 150,000 residents in southern China's Guangdong Province have been evacuated as Typhoon Matmo approaches, prompting the country's emergency response to the disaster to be stepped up.
On Sunday morning, the Guangdong Provincial Flood Control Headquarters upgraded its typhoon response from Level 2 to Level 1. By Saturday evening, a total of 151,352 residents had been relocated, including 9,916 from offshore areas.
Typhoon Matmo, the 21st storm of this Pacific typhoon season, is moving northwest at approximately 25 kilometers per hour (15 mph). It is forecast to make landfall around midday on Sunday as a powerful hurricane with winds up to 45 meters per second (150 mph). Heavy rain and gusty winds are expected in coastal cities.
In preparation for Matmo, Zhanjiang City suspended all classes at educational institutions, suspended work and production activities, and halted all traffic as of Saturday evening. All highways were also closed to traffic as of Sunday morning. The Guangdong Provincial Maritime Administration suspended shipping in the affected waters, and rescue services throughout the region were put on high alert.
