Beijing, October 5 (Xinhua) — Interregional passenger traffic in China reached a record high of approximately 1.24 billion trips during the first half of the eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holidays, demonstrating robust activity in the Chinese travel sector, the Ministry of Transport reported Sunday.
According to the department, interregional passenger traffic reached 301.29 million trips on October 4, a 6.1 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Average daily passenger traffic during the first half of the school holidays exceeded 310 million trips.
The number of passenger journeys by rail increased year-on-year by 4.5 percent to 18.33 million trips, by river transport by 5.6 percent to 1.91 million trips, and by air transport by 4.1 percent to 2.32 million trips.
Car travel remained the dominant choice for the Chinese population, accounting for 278.73 million trips, up 6.2 percent year-on-year.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the most popular travel destinations during the holidays were first-tier cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, as well as tourist cities such as Chengdu and Xi'an.
