BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) — China's meteorological and emergency management agencies have raised their alert and emergency response levels as Typhoon Matmo, the 21st Pacific typhoon of 2025, continues to strengthen and heads toward the country's southern coast.
The National Meteorological Center on Saturday evening raised its previously issued "orange" typhoon alert to "red," the highest level in the agency's four-tier system, warning that Matmo was approaching the coast of Guangdong and Hainan provinces and was expected to make landfall around midday on Sunday.
As of 6:00 p.m. Saturday, the center of Matmo was located over the South China Sea, about 400 km southeast of the city of Wenchang, with winds near its center reaching 35 m/s, the Hainan meteorological station reported.
The typhoon is forecast to move northwest at 25-30 km/h, gradually strengthening, and could potentially reach the strong typhoon category with maximum wind speeds of 42-48 m/s.
China's National Flood and Drought Control Headquarters, in turn, raised its flood and typhoon emergency response to Level 3 in Guangdong and Hainan provinces, and maintained a Level 4 flood emergency response for the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Furthermore, at 7:00 PM Saturday, local authorities in Hainan Province announced they had upgraded their typhoon emergency response to Level 1, the highest.
