Warsaw, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — Poland's Defense Investment Agency (ZIOTP) and Poland's state-owned oil pipeline operator PERN signed a preliminary agreement in Warsaw on Friday to expand the country's fuel infrastructure as part of a plan to connect to the NATO pipeline network.

Under the agreement, the project, worth approximately $5.5 billion, includes the expansion of fuel storage facilities in Poland for NATO military needs, as well as the construction of approximately 300 kilometers of pipelines from the Polish-German border to the PERN oil depot near the city of Bydgoszcz in northern Poland.

According to the Polish Press Agency, Polish Deputy Minister of Defence Cezary Tomczyk said that NATO has already allocated funds for the planning and design of this project.

Earlier this year, the German magazine Der Spiegel reported that NATO was considering extending its Cold War-era fuel pipeline system from Germany to Poland and the Czech Republic. The project is estimated to cost approximately $22 billion, with its main portion scheduled for completion by 2035. –0–
