New Delhi, October 2 (Xinhua) — At least 11 people drowned and several remain missing after the vehicle they were traveling in fell off a bridge into a river in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday evening, local police confirmed.

An operation to search for missing persons is underway.

The accident took place in Khandwa district, the victims were on their way to a religious festival to take part in the ritual immersion of idols.

"A 12-year-old boy accidentally turned the ignition key on a tractor-trailer, causing it to start and move. The tractor slid off a bridge and fell into the Abna River. The people inside also fell into the water," Assistant Superintendent of Police Abhishek Ranjan told local media.
