Oslo, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — European Union (EU) leaders held an informal summit in Copenhagen on Wednesday to discuss, among other things, the advancement of the pan-European "Wall of Drones" project and continued support for Ukraine, according to statements made at a press conference later that day.
During the meeting, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the Commission had received the green light to continue work on the "Wall of Drones" project and the rearmament roadmap.
She described the project as an anti-drone defense system designed to “quickly detect, intercept, and, if necessary, neutralize drones.”
European Council President António Costa noted that the leaders discussed continued support for Ukraine, adding that this discussion will continue at the next European Council meeting in October.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called funding for Kyiv an investment in the European Union's security.
The informal format meant that no binding decisions were made, but EU institutions and national capitals indicated their intention to continue working on initiatives in the field of defence and support for Ukraine in the run-up to the October summit.
European leaders will remain in Copenhagen and attend the European Political Community (EPC) summit on Thursday.
Ahead of the summits, suspicious drone activity has disrupted airport operations and led to increased security measures.
