UN, October 1 /Xinhua/ — While the Gaza peace proposal remains under consideration, fighting continues, with Israel carrying out deadly airstrikes and Palestinians launching rockets into the Jewish state, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Wednesday.

Dozens of people have been killed or wounded in recent attacks in Gaza, the agency said.

Published reports say sirens have sounded in Israeli towns near Gaza.

OCHA, citing Gaza health authorities, reported that the death toll since the war began in October 2023 has exceeded 66,000 people.

"OCHA reiterates that civilians must never be targeted," the agency stated. "Under international humanitarian law, they must be protected."

The agency noted that health authorities also reported that 177 people, including 36 children, have died from hunger and malnutrition since the famine in Gaza was confirmed in August.

According to the United Nations Population Fund, more than 60 percent of pregnant women and new mothers suffer from malnutrition.

According to OCHA, humanitarian organizations continue to call for unimpeded and sustained access to and within Gaza to deliver critical supplies and services sufficient to meet the needs of the population.

UNICEF warned that displaced children have been living in fear and terror for several days, amid bombing and shelling and without access to food and water.
