Jakarta, October 2 (Xinhua) — The Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province erupted on Wednesday. Ash plumes were recorded reaching a height of 5 kilometers, prompting the aviation alert level to be raised to maximum, according to Indonesia's Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center.
The volcano, located on the island of Flores, ejected thick gray clouds of ash that drifted west and northwest from the crater.
A red alert for aviation—the highest level of alert—was issued, prohibiting flights below 6,000 meters near the volcano. Airlines were also advised to be aware of possible flight disruptions caused by volcanic ash.
Authorities warned residents of the volcano's slopes, tourists, and visitors not to undertake any activities within a 6-kilometer radius of the crater. They also warned of possible lava flows along the rivers originating at the summit during heavy rainfall.
Residents of areas affected by the ash plume are advised to wear masks or cover their nose and mouth to protect their respiratory tract.
There are 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia. –0–
