Washington, October 1 (Xinhua) — The White House is exploring measures to combat drug cartels "arriving overland from Venezuela," US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday.
"We're going to turn our attention to the cartels now," he told reporters as he left the White House. "We're going to take cartels coming overland very seriously."
His comments follow recent US military strikes in international waters in the southern Caribbean targeting boats the White House says were carrying drugs from Venezuela.
US strikes have killed 17 people on three ships this month, according to US data.
The Trump administration has also deployed warships to the Caribbean. As The New York Times reported on Tuesday, the Pentagon has established a force of more than 6,500 troops in the region.
While some cocaine is trafficked from South America through Venezuela, the country is not a major source of drugs shipped to the United States, according to a 2020 report from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. –0–
