Vienna, October 1 (Xinhua) — The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is facing a precarious nuclear safety situation after being without external power for more than a week, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on Tuesday.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said the agency is working with both Russia and Ukraine to facilitate the speedy restoration of off-site power supply to the Zaporizhzhya NPP.
On September 23, Zaporizhzhya NPP lost power for the tenth time due to damage to its only high-voltage line caused by military action. Emergency diesel generators then automatically resumed operation, providing power to the safety systems and cooling systems for the six Zaporizhzhya NPP reactors and the spent fuel.
"Although the plant is currently coping with the emergency diesel generators—the last line of defense—and there is no immediate danger as long as they continue to operate, it is clear that this is an unsustainable situation from a nuclear safety perspective. Neither side would benefit from a nuclear accident," warned R. Grossi.
