BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) — The China National Space Administration (CNSA) on Wednesday released a stunning image of the Tianwen-2 probe with Earth, taken during the orbital phase of the spacecraft's flight.
A newly released image taken by the camera mounted on the probe's robotic arm clearly shows China's five-star red flag and the white return capsule against the distant blue backdrop of Earth.
The Tianwen-2 probe is currently approximately 43 million km from Earth and 45 million km from asteroid 2016HO3, the CNSA reported.
The probe successfully completed a series of in-orbit tests, including the installation of sample collection devices and a self-check of its electronic equipment. According to the CNSA, all systems are operating normally, and the onboard instruments have begun collecting valuable scientific data on the space environment.
Tianwen-2, launched on May 29 of this year, is designed to collect and return asteroid samples to Earth. This mission is China's attempt to shed light on the formation and evolution of asteroids and the early solar system.
The Tianwen-2 mission consists of several tasks that will be carried out over the course of a ten-year expedition, including collecting soil samples from the near-Earth asteroid 2016HO3 and exploring the main-belt comet 311P, which is located beyond Mars. -0-
