ZHENGZHOU, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) — Five people were killed and three others were hospitalized after a toxic gas leak at a factory in Hebi City, central China's Henan Province, local authorities said Tuesday.

The incident occurred on September 29 at approximately 7:00 a.m. at the factory site of Hexin Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., a local chemical company, in the Shancheng district. According to preliminary reports, the accident was caused by a sulfuric acid leak from a transit tank. The substance traveled through the storm drain to a septic tank in a restroom, where it reacted, producing hydrogen sulfide gas.

The condition of the most injured person is assessed as stable, while the other two received minor injuries, the district emergency management committee noted.

The department emphasized that cleanup efforts following the accident have been completed, and all personnel have been evacuated from the plant. Investigative measures are underway to establish the circumstances and causes of the tragedy.
