Vladivostok, September 30 (Xinhua) — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, according to a Telegram post by the Kamchatka branch of the Federal Research Center of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The tremors were recorded at 10:07 a.m. local time, 98 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of Kamchatka Krai. The earthquake originated at a depth of 48.1 km.
According to RIA Novosti, the earthquake, measuring up to 5.0 on the Richter scale, was felt in various areas of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. No tsunami threat was issued.
On July 30, Kamchatka experienced the strongest earthquake since 1952, with a magnitude of 8.8. Since then, scientists have been recording aftershocks—repeated tremors—every day.
