Caracas, September 30 (Xinhua) — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro signed a decree declaring a state of emergency in response to what the government called foreign aggression. This was announced by Vice President Delcy Rodríguez on Monday at a meeting of the National Council for Sovereignty and Peace.
The document gives N. Maduro additional powers to ensure security in the event of a military invasion of the country, she explained.
The decree is aimed at protecting the country's territorial integrity, sovereignty, independence, and vital strategic interests in the face of any serious violation or aggression committed from outside against the country's territory, the vice president noted.
D. Rodriguez added that the recent buildup of US military presence in the Caribbean violates the UN Charter and already poses a threat to Venezuela. She noted that in the event of a US attack, the executive order would immediately authorize the president to mobilize the armed forces and ensure the continuity of essential services.
The Venezuelan Constitution prohibits anyone, inside or outside the country, from advocating, supporting, or justifying foreign military aggression against Venezuela. The Vice President warned that violators will be held accountable under national law.
She added that this decree also allows the government to implement economic plans to ensure the life of the country and the full functioning of state institutions. –0–
