Beijing, September 30 (Xinhua) — China consistently believes that a peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through political and diplomatic means is the only viable option, and opposes the use of force, sanctions, and pressure, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday.

Guo Jiakun made the statement while commenting on the UN Security Council's failure to adopt a draft resolution proposed by China and Russia on the technical extension of Resolution 2231.

According to him, the proposed resolution aims to provide more time and space for diplomatic negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue and create favorable conditions for a final political settlement. The Chinese diplomat emphasized that pushing through a sanctions restoration mechanism is not constructive and leads to a setback in the political and diplomatic process.

Guo Jiakun noted that the root cause of the current crisis was the US's unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The official spokesperson stated that China calls on the United States and European countries to demonstrate political sincerity, increase diplomatic efforts, return the Iranian nuclear issue to the path of political and diplomatic resolution, and prevent further escalation.

“China will continue to maintain an objective and fair position and play a constructive role in promoting a solution that takes into account the legitimate interests of all parties,” Guo Jiakun concluded. –0–
