CHONGQING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) — The character "yong," meaning "eternal," was announced as the year 2025 character for the Belt and Road Initiative in Yongchuan District of southwest China's Chongqing City on Sunday.
The event to select the annual character was organized by the China Public Relations Society (CPRS) and the Yunchuan District Government. The list of nine "candidate characters" also included "kai" (openness), "lian" (interaction), "wen" (stability), and others.
According to Guo Weimin, head of the Chinese People's Congress, Chinese characters represent an important bridge in intercultural communication and international exchange. The event discussed the promotion of Chinese culture, the dissemination of Chinese civilization, cultural exchanges, and mutual learning between civilizations within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The character "yong," which resembles ripples on water, symbolizes the endless and enduring influence of Chinese culture, according to Tsinghua University professor Huang Tianshu. He explained that this character represents historical continuity and the hope for long-term cooperation and friendship.
