Baku, September 28 /Xinhua/ — The opening ceremony of the 3rd Commonwealth of Independent States Games took place on Sunday at a stadium in the Azerbaijani city of Ganja, the Report news agency reported.
The competition will be attended by 1,624 athletes from 13 countries, including eight CIS countries, Turkey, Cuba, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Oman.
Host Azerbaijan has the most representative team, with 340 athletes. Russia is represented by 262 athletes, Uzbekistan by 254, Belarus by 240, Kazakhstan by 147, and Tajikistan by 144.
The competition program includes 23 sports, including wrestling, boxing, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, U16 football, and the Azerbaijani equestrian game of chovgan. Matches and tournaments will be held at 12 venues in seven cities across the country.
The closing ceremony of the Games will also take place on October 8 at the Ganja City Stadium. –0–
