Beijing, September 28 (Xinhua) — As of September 24, a total of 980,000 foreigners have crossed the border in both directions through Hainan Province in southern China since the beginning of this year, an increase of 46.3 percent compared to the same period last year. Russia, Kazakhstan, and the Republic of Korea have become important tourist sources for this island province.
The sharp increase in foreign tourists to Hainan is due to the ongoing optimization of the country's visa-free policy. According to the Zhongxinshe News Agency, citizens of 86 countries can currently visit Hainan visa-free.
Since the beginning of this year, 395,000 foreigners have entered Hainan visa-free, accounting for 88.8 percent of the total number of foreign travelers to the province.
The city of Sanya is rightfully considered a resort paradise for foreigners. According to the Haikou Port Authority, the capital of Hainan Province, 570,000 foreign visitors have crossed the Chinese border through Sanya's air port since the beginning of this year.
After China introduced a trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens holding regular passports on September 14, many Russians are choosing Sanya as their starting point for travel within China, noted Zhang Xinchao, a guide at a local travel agency.
In response to the growing passenger flow, border and customs services, as well as other departments in Hainan Province, have taken numerous measures to improve the efficiency of customs clearance. -0-
