New Delhi, September 27 (Xinhua) – Thirty-one people were killed and at least 58 injured in a stampede that occurred Saturday evening in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, V. Senthil Balaji, a senior political leader of the state's ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, confirmed.

The party leader said 46 people were hospitalised in a private clinic, while 12 people were being treated in a government hospital.

The tragedy occurred at a mass rally organised by film actor Vijay in support of his political organisation, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in the state's Karur district.
