UN, September 27 /Xinhua/ — Iran's cooperation agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be invalidated if UN sanctions are reinstated, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on Friday.
On the same day, the UN Security Council failed to pass a resolution that would have extended the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), for six months to allow time for diplomacy and avoid automatic reinstatement of sanctions against Iran.
The United Kingdom, France, and Germany—the three European countries participating in the JCPOA—announced that they had triggered the sanctions snapback mechanism on August 28, notifying the Security Council of Tehran's "non-compliance." This mechanism is scheduled to enter into force on September 28 unless the Security Council takes other action.
"We have already stated that this move by the EU3 and the Security Council's decision will impact Iran's cooperation with the agency (IAEA – Xinhua)," A. Araghchi told reporters after the Security Council vote. "Unfortunately, if all of this is activated, then this agreement between Iran and the agency will also cease to be valid and will not be able to be implemented," the Foreign Minister emphasized.
Iran and the IAEA reached an agreement to resume cooperation in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on September 9. At a Security Council meeting on Friday, A. Araghchi noted that IAEA inspectors are in Iran and doing their job.
