TEHRAN, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Saturday that the United States is the main obstacle to restoring the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as UN sanctions lifted under the nuclear deal were reimposed later in the day.
Speaking at Tehran airport after returning from the UN General Assembly in New York, M. Pezeshkian noted that during his visit to the UN, France, Great Britain, and Germany, which initiated the snapback mechanism, were informed of Iran's readiness to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
"The United States always tries to prevent an agreement by coming up with new pretexts," the president said. "In reality, the United States cannot tolerate a strong Iran and wants to weaken our country."
Last month, three European powers triggered the JCPOA's automatic reimposition of UN sanctions, reinstating sanctions previously lifted in exchange for curbs on Tehran's nuclear program.
On the eve of the restrictive measures coming into effect, Iran recalled its ambassadors from the capitals of France, the UK, and Germany. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared on Saturday that this mechanism was "illegal, invalid, and of no effect," blaming the crisis on "US betrayal and European inaction."
"The US betrayed diplomacy. The Europeans buried it," he emphasized.
The JCPOA, signed in 2015 by Iran and six world powers, came under pressure after Washington's unilateral withdrawal in 2018, prompting Tehran to gradually scale back its commitments.
