XI'AN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) — Three people were trapped in a coal mine accident in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, local authorities said Friday.

The accident occurred around 3:30 PM on Thursday when a section of an underground roadway collapsed at a coal mine in Zhenping County, Ankang. At the time of the accident, eight workers were performing repairs to restore coal production. According to Zhenping County authorities, five of them were safely rescued.

Built in 1998, the mine has been undergoing safety improvements in coal mining since March 2024.

The search and rescue operation is currently ongoing. Local authorities stated that it is being hampered by persistent rainfall. -0-
