WUHAN, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) — A report released Friday showed significant progress China has made in ecological protection along the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

The document, titled "A Mighty River Nurtures a Great Nation – Achievements, Inspirations and Global Significance of Yangtze River Governance in the New Era," was released by Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with the Xinhua News Agency, as part of the ongoing Great Rivers Dialogue 2025 in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province.

It notes that 11 provincial-level regions along the Yangtze River Economic Belt, which accounts for half of China's population and GDP, have seen historic changes in environmental protection.

In recent years, China has prioritized environmental protection along the Yangtze River, which is one of the country's most important ecological treasures, the report said.

Pollution control campaigns are curbing environmental degradation in the region. According to the report, the proportion of surface water classified as Classes I-III on a five-tier scale in the Yangtze River basin has increased from 82.3 percent in 2016 to over 98 percent today, while water quality in the main river has remained at Class II for five consecutive years.

The region's aquatic biological resources and biodiversity are also recovering: 344 native fish species were recorded in the river basin between 2021 and 2024, 36 more than between 2017 and 2020.

The report also emphasizes the importance of coordinated efforts among provinces, cities and relevant departments, as well as steps to strengthen legislation, improve cooperation mechanisms and implement an environmental compensation system. -0-
