Lilongwe, September 25 (Xinhua) — Former Malawi President Peter Mutharika won the presidential election with 56.8 percent of the vote, securing a decisive lead over incumbent leader Lazarus Chakwera, the country's electoral commission announced on Wednesday.

The president-elect, running for the Democratic Progressive Party, garnered nearly 3.04 million votes on September 16. L. Chakwera, representing the Malawi Congress Party, garnered approximately 1.77 million votes, according to Annabelle Mthalimanja, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Malawi, at a press briefing in Lilongwe. A total of 17 candidates were participating in the presidential race.

85-year-old P. Mutharika received 56.8% of the valid votes, exceeding the 50% plus one threshold needed to win in the first round. 70-year-old L. Chakwera received 33%.

P. Mutharika, who led Malawi from 2014 to 2020, will return to his post along with former chairperson of the electoral commission Jane Ansah as vice-president. –0–
