BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) — China's Ministry of Commerce announced Thursday it will launch an investigation into Mexico's restrictive measures that create trade and investment barriers against China.
According to the department, the investigation will begin on September 25.
According to the ministry, the Mexican government's plans to increase customs duties on products from China and other partner countries that do not have free trade agreements with Mexico, as well as other trade and investment restrictions imposed by that country in recent years against China, are subject to investigation.
In response to a media question, a Ministry of Commerce official stated that, given US tariff abuses, all countries must jointly oppose any form of unilateralism and protectionism, without sacrificing the interests of third parties due to threats.
According to the official representative, if Mexico unilaterally imposes additional tariffs, even within the framework of the World Trade Organization, this would not only harm the interests of its trading partners, including China, but would also seriously impact the business environment in the country itself, undermining companies' confidence in investing in Mexico. The Chinese side firmly opposes this move, the Ministry of Commerce representative emphasized.
He noted that the decision to conduct the investigation is aimed at resolutely protecting the interests of the relevant industries in China.
The Ministry will make an objective and fair decision based on the investigation results and take necessary measures in accordance with the actual situation to resolutely protect China's legitimate rights and interests, the official representative concluded.
