Lilongwe, September 24 (Xinhua) — Malawi's incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat in the presidential election held on September 16. Former President Peter Mutharika leads by more than 1 million votes.

In a televised address less than two hours before the Malawi Electoral Commission was scheduled to announce the election results, Mr. Chakwera thanked all Malawians for their support over the past five years.

According to the latest figures released on Monday, P. Mutharika received more than 2 million votes, and L. Chakwera more than 700,000 votes. –0–
