RAMALLAH, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) — Rallies were held in several West Bank cities on Tuesday to celebrate Western recognition of the State of Palestine and demonstrate solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip.

Hundreds of Palestinians, along with foreign activists, took part in a rally in Al-Manara Square in Ramallah. People waved Palestinian flags. Posters hung with slogans such as "In support of Gaza and its prisoners and in rejection of the war of annihilation," "In recognition of international positions supporting our people's right to freedom and independence," and so on.

Fatah Central Committee member Sabri Saidam told Xinhua that it was "a day of rejoicing for Palestinians." He said Palestinians respect countries that support Palestine.

Ending the war in Gaza is a "priority," said Saidam. "We must be involved. We must stop the war. That's number one. Then we must get to work building Gaza… We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we are determined. This is our future. This is our identity. This is our dignity," he emphasized.

Former European Parliament Vice-President Luisa Morgantini told Xinhua at a rally that Europe's recognition is an "important step."

"We feel that Palestinians should be free. Palestinians should choose for themselves what they want," L. Morgantini noted, adding that Palestinians are capable of building their own state. She also called on Western countries to do more for "Palestinian freedom and self-determination."

Recently, several Western countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Portugal, and France, recognized the State of Palestine based on the principle of "two states for two peoples." Today, more than 150 UN member states recognize Palestinian statehood.
