LILONGWE, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) — Malawi's Electoral Commission is expected to announce the winner of the presidential race after the general election held on September 16.

By Monday evening, the Electoral Commission had counted and verified results in 24 of the country's 36 councils and is expected to release results in the remaining 12 councils later, allowing the winner to be officially declared.

Partial results indicate that former President Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party received 2,022,879 votes, far ahead of incumbent Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party, who received 732,575 votes. Dalitso Kabambe of the United Movement for Transformation came in third with 146,664 votes.

According to Malawi's electoral law, the winning presidential candidate must receive more than 50% of the valid votes cast. Failure to achieve this threshold will result in a runoff.

Seventeen candidates, including former President Joyce Banda, current Vice President Michael Usi and Atupele Muluzi, who is the son of former President Bakili Muluzi, contested for the presidency. –0–
