BEIJING, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) — A joint expedition involving scientists from China and five Central Asian countries was held in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR) from Sept. 12 to 20 as part of an archaeological project in the Fergana region.

The event was organized by the People's Government of Hami City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and Northwest University (NWU), which is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, Northwest China.

The expedition was aimed at showcasing China's achievements in archaeology and disseminating its experience in preserving cultural heritage sites, according to the Zhongxinshe news agency.

As part of the expedition, more than 50 Chinese and foreign scientists visited the cities of Urumqi, Hami, and the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where they became familiar with local archaeological sites, including the Jiaohe, Gaochang, and Beiting settlements.

At the NWU Ancient Nomadic Culture Research and Educational Base along the Great Silk Road, located in the Balikun Kazakh Autonomous County /Barkel Kazakh Autonomous County/ Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the expedition members were shown important archaeological discoveries made by Chinese researchers in the Eastern Tianshan region.

During the expedition, scientists confirmed the need for multilateral archaeological research, including a joint archaeological project in the Fergana region involving China, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. The archaeologists are focusing on issues related to cooperation in joint excavations, the protection of cultural monuments, and the training of specialists.

The archaeological expedition to the XUAR is the third as part of the Fergana project. The first took place in 2019 in the Osh region of Kyrgyzstan, and the second in 2023 in the Fergana region of Uzbekistan.
