Beijing, September 24 (Xinhua) — During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China succeeded in significantly reducing the number of industrial accidents and improving the effectiveness of disaster response measures, according to a press conference on emergency management on Wednesday.
Emergency Management Minister Wang Xiangxi said that by 2024, the number of fatalities from occupational safety accidents nationwide has decreased by 28.4 percent compared to the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020).
According to him, in 2024, the number of major and especially major incidents dropped to single digits for the first time, which is 43.8 percent less than at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan.
Wang Xiangxi also noted that in the 2021-2024 period, all key indicators of natural disasters have significantly decreased compared to the previous five-year period: the average annual numbers of victims, fatalities, and missing persons, as well as direct economic losses relative to GDP, decreased by 31.3 percent, 23 percent, and 34.3 percent, respectively.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China's efforts to prevent industrial accidents became more thorough, and the country's response to natural disaster emergencies proved more effective, Wang Xiangxi added.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the central government allocated nearly 60 billion yuan (approximately US$8.44 billion) in government bond funds to implement projects to strengthen disaster response capacity. Thus, the construction of six regional emergency response centers was largely completed across the country.
