BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — China has made new breakthroughs in providing comprehensive and high-quality public education services in recent years, with the country's basic education development reaching the average level of high-income countries, Education Minister Huai Jinpeng said on Tuesday.
According to him, access to quality compulsory education has steadily expanded in the country, with 2,895 counties across the country achieving balanced development in this area.
Since 2012, the gross enrollment rate for preschool education has increased by 27.5 percentage points, rising from 64.5 percent to 92 percent, Huai Jinpeng noted.
Higher education in China has also become widespread, he added, emphasizing that the gross enrollment rate in higher education has more than doubled since 2012, rising from 30 percent to the current 60.8 percent.
