Tehran, September 23 (Xinhua) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi in New York on Monday to discuss recent bilateral interactions, according to a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, A. Araghchi noted Tehran's "goodwill and responsible approach" to its nuclear issue. He emphasized that any progress in resolving the issue will depend on the other parties demonstrating responsible behavior and ceasing to make "excessive demands" and "abusing the UN Security Council" to pressure Tehran, according to the statement.

R. Grossi, for his part, praised Iran's "positive" approach to engaging with the agency, especially given the agreement reached earlier this month between the two sides to resume bilateral cooperation. He called on all relevant parties to utilize diplomatic avenues to prevent an escalation of tensions.

Iran suspended cooperation with the IAEA following Israeli and US attacks on its nuclear facilities in June, according to a law passed by parliament and the Guardian Council.

Last month, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany invoked the snapback mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran as a means of pressuring Tehran to resume nuclear negotiations. On Friday, the UN Security Council failed to adopt a resolution that would have blocked the restoration of sanctions against Iran. The sanctions are expected to take effect later this month unless the Security Council takes further action.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council announced on Saturday that the country's cooperation with the IAEA would be "effectively" suspended after the UN Security Council voted against extending the lifting of international sanctions against Tehran.
