UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for stepped-up efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the SDG Moment event held at the world body's headquarters.
At an event held during the high-level week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (GA), A. Guterres outlined the path to achieving the SDGs: reforming the global financial architecture, prioritizing measures to combat climate change, and preparing for technological transformation.
“In everything we do, we put peace first,” the Secretary-General said, emphasizing that in 2024, global military spending was 13 times higher than official development assistance.
According to UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, in the five years leading up to 2030, only 35 percent of SDGs are on track, 47 percent are showing insufficient progress, and 18 percent are moving in the opposite direction.
"The financial picture is equally bleak. At a time of growing needs, net official development assistance fell by 7.1 percent last year," she said. "We are not making as much progress as we should in fulfilling the fundamental promises of the Sustainable Development Goals."
“Development will only be fair and sustainable if it gives a voice to those who are too often ignored, and if we join forces and show solidarity with each other,” she added.
In September 2015, the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes 17 SDGs aimed at ending poverty, promoting equality, combating climate change, and other tasks to be achieved by 2030. –0–
