HANGZHOU, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) — Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang on Monday called for joint efforts to actively build biosphere reserves, promote the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, and ensure coordinated progress of the economy and the environment.
Ding Xuexiang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province.
According to the Vice Premier of the State Council, China has achieved significant success in ecological and green development. By strengthening its own environmental protection system, he stated, China is actively participating in global environmental and climate governance, contributing Chinese wisdom and strength to building a clean and beautiful world.
As he emphasized, China has become an important participant, contributor and initiator of global environmental protection.
Ding Xuexiang put forward four proposals: promoting coordinated efforts and actively participating in global cooperation; strengthening scientific and technological support and promoting the exchange of scientific and technological achievements; taking a comprehensive approach to ensuring environmental protection, responding to climate change, and improving people's well-being; upholding multilateralism and improving the global environmental governance system.
The opening ceremony was also attended by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and Iran's Vice President and head of the Iranian Environment Protection Organization, Sheena Ansari.
Speaking at the ceremony, O. Azoulay praised China's achievements in ecology and environmental protection, as well as its contribution to global environmental governance.
The Director-General of UNESCO called on the international community to firmly adhere to the goals of the UN Charter, strengthen international cooperation in areas such as the conservation of biodiversity and the protection of the biosphere, and promote the creation of a world in which humans and nature live in harmony.
Before the opening ceremony, Ding Xuexiang met with O. Azoulay and emphasized that China is willing to work with UNESCO to provide firm support and deepen practical cooperation in various fields, including education, science and technology, world heritage protection, and environmental protection, so as to jointly build a community with a shared future for humanity and benefit people around the world.
O. Azoulay thanked China for its support of UNESCO, noting that this support is particularly important given the serious challenges facing multilateralism. She emphasized that UNESCO is committed to strengthening cooperation with China to advance peace and human development.
Ding Xuexiang also toured the congress exhibition area, calling for efforts to achieve the organic integration of economic, social and environmental benefits.
The opening ceremony was attended by approximately 1,300 people, including Chinese and foreign government officials, representatives of biosphere reserves, scientists and technicians, company executives, and representatives of international organizations. –0–
