BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) — The Belt and Road International Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition, part of the 8th Dunhuang International Silk Road Cultural Expo, opened Saturday in Dunhuang, northwest China's Gansu Province, the Gansu Provincial Administration of Culture and Tourism announced on its website.

The exhibition consists of two parts, dedicated to China's exchanges with foreign countries and the history of the Silk Road, respectively. In total, the exhibition features over 100 masterpieces of calligraphy and painting by Chinese and international artists.

In her speech, Gong Jiajia, Deputy Director of the Gansu Provincial Bureau of Culture and Tourism, noted that the Dunhuang International Cultural Expo has already become an important platform for inter-civilizational exchanges and mutual learning. The arts of painting and calligraphy, as the common heritage of humanity, have the power to transcend language and cultural barriers and reach out to people's hearts.

"We will use culture as a means of communication and art as a bridge to promote cultural exchanges and cooperation within the Belt and Road," she said.

“Even though we come from different countries and speak different languages, our aspiration for beauty, peace, and the future is common,” said a representative of the artists participating in this exhibition, adding that the success of this exhibition once again proves that art is a universal language that unites different cultures and nationalities.

The exhibition is organized by the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China, the Gansu Provincial Administration of Culture and Tourism, the Gansu Provincial Literary and Art Workers' Association, the China Academy of Art, and the Beijing Haidian Artists' Association.

The Dunhuang International Silk Road Cultural Expo was held for the first time in 2016. -0-
